Devastating gun violence took place at Apalachee High School in Barrow County, Georgia, on September 4, 2024. Around 10:20 a.m., the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office, the Georgia State Patrol, and the FBI were among the law enforcement agencies who responded to reports of an active shooter. Sadly, nine more individuals were hurried to hospitals for treatment while at least four people perished.​

What we know so far:

  • At least four people are said to have died in a shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, according to law enforcement sources from outside the state. About thirty more individuals were reportedly injured, however, it’s unclear how many of those injuries were from gunshot wounds.
  • At a press conference, Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith declared, “What you see behind us is an evil thing today.”
  • According to the sources, a suspect who is of student age is in custody, although it’s not apparent if the individual genuinely attends the school.
  • An hour outside of Atlanta, the school is visible on camera, and footage from there reveals multiple ambulances and a sizable, active police presence.

The school was promptly placed under lockdown by emergency officials as they were ready to defend the area. After that, families were reunited with their kids at the school’s football stadium, where personnel and pupils had been taken to safety. Many people were flown to various hospitals, including Northeast Georgia Medical Center and Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.​

Authorities detained the gunman, whose identity has not been made public. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp said that state resources had been sent in to help with the response and offered his condolences in a statement. As investigations continue, the Barrow County community is grappling with the shock of this tragedy. President Joe Biden was also briefed on the situation, and the White House has been coordinating with local and federal authorities.

Due to the tremendous concern this incident has caused, schools throughout the state are implementing extra security measures out of prudence. The inquiry is still ongoing as of right now, and additional information should become available in the next several days.​
