Veteran American Alex Morgan declares his retirement
Veteran American Alex Morgan declares his retirement. The US women’s national team forward Alex Morgan announced her retirement on social media on Thursday.
Morgan also revealed that she is expecting a second child. She said she would play one more game on Sunday when San Diego Wave FC meets the North Carolina Courage.
Morgan said, “I have so much clarity about this decision, and I am so happy to be able to finally tell you,” in the video. “It has been a long time coming, and this decision wasn’t easy, but at the beginning of 2024 I felt in my heart and soul that this was the last season that I would play soccer.”
Morgan, 35, won the World Cup twice and took home an Olympic gold medal. She ranks fifth in USWNT history with 224 caps and 123 goals. She did not make the USWNT squad for the 2024 Olympics, after competing for them all spring.
2010 saw Morgan make her USWNT debut. She helped the United States qualify for the 2011 World Cup later that year by scoring a vital goal in an Italian FIFA World Cup playoff. She soon established herself as a team regular and teamed up with Abby Wambach to help the United States place second in the 2011 World Cup before taking home the gold medal in the 2012 Olympics.

“I grew up on this team, it was so much more than soccer,” Morgan said in a statement from U.S. Soccer. “It was the friendships and the unwavering respect and support among each other, the relentless push for global investment in women’s sports, and the pivotal moments of success both on and off the field.
“I am so incredibly honored to have borrowed the crest for more than 15 years. Learned so much about myself in that time and so much of that is a credit to my teammates and our fans. I feel immense pride in where this team is headed, and I will forever be a fan of the USWNT.
“My desire for success may have always driven me, but what I got in return was more than I could have ever asked and hoped for.”
Prior to the 2015 World Cup, Morgan suffered from injuries, but she eventually made her debut for the USWNT, which battled its way through the competition to defeat Japan 5-2 in the final. She finished equal for the most goals scored in the 2019 World Cup with six, five of which came in a 13-0 victory over Thailand.
In 2023, she participated in her fourth World Cup, starting every match as the USWNT suffered its first-ever round of 16 loss.
